I was reading a chapter concerning dharma, the path of righteous living with a code of conduct. The Draupadi disrobing incident from the Mahabharata was mentioned. Bhishma, whilst knowing the wrongness of this order issued by his king, could not disobey the king. It occurred to me how we as a culture are unable to speak up to authority and power. The “not so powerful” go through atrocities and injustices till this day. What we see on the world stage today too seems to be a misunderstanding of the interpretation of the set of values given to us.
I believe that dharma encompasses honesty, purity, self discipline, an adherence to truth, non violence, a discerning intellect overpowering the mind from her default patterns amongst several others. The foundation of dharma is compassion and selfless unconditional love as per my understanding and experience.
The elements of nature too are operating on a set of rules and gives us gifts of sunshine, moonlight, rain, stars, oceans etc etc. The list is endless. Why are we caught up in our little minds which seldom use discernment? Why are we afraid to stand up for justice and righteous conduct irrespective of power and status?
