AN EXAMINED LIFE

I was explaining four attributes that one needs to lead a fulfilled and balanced life mentioned in the sacred texts to some clients this week. I’ve written these down and am sharing at their request.

The two attributes that are necessary to live a happy life in the material world are our financial safety along with a healthy desire. One cannot buy basics if one struggles financially. Financial instability gives rise to a great amount of stress. I translate a healthy desire to a life that lives with a wholesome sense of purpose and motivation. It is the energy that drives one to get out of bed every morning. It is important to feed the body enough to keep it running efficiently. Desire when lived from a healthy perspective serves a being well. The food ingested provides energy and serves as a fuel to run the body smoothly. One consumes only what is necessary and abstains from hoarding and living from a place of lack to experience abundance in every area of life.

The spiritual attributes of dharma and moksha can be translated in simple language as follows. One needs a set of values and boundaries to define how one must live consciously in this body. It gives rise to a healthy sense of fear. I define moksha (salvation) not as a phenomenon that happens after we leave this body. For me, it indicates the ability of a human to live out of awareness and shift age old patterns. It requires us to manage our minds in away that serves us. It indicates mind mastery.

As a conclusion, let each one of us reflect on how we are doing in relation to these four attributes. My understanding and experience is a feeling of well being and bliss when all the four work symbiotically and support each other like the wheels of a carriage.
